Pets rubbing face on walls

Cat allorubbing and scent leaving behaviors are common. The best way to explain it is that kitties like to use almost all of their face/body parts to rub against almost everything else. Well, maybe a better explanation is that certain cat areas have glands, being strong secretors of hormones. The residue is obvious, likely with some mixed-in cat food and dust adsorbed to the chemical structures. Many pet owners are grossed out by the leftover marks, but we’ve always been reluctant to clean the hard-earned, face-scratching efforts on the wall.

The function is to let others know who the territory belongs to. The cats also wants to leave a trace for others to know that ‘Hi, I was here a bit earlier’. For our kitties, they may be doing it as a sign of attention and affection. Maybe they are hungry, asking for pet food. They are constantly in the same area (the vicinity of the house) and walking by the same walls, corners, and furniture, so the function is likely not the traditional one to get other cats aware, since it’s just Max and Zuma here.

We’ve noticed they do the rubbing and head bunting around the time when they look back-and-forth directly into our eyes. They want some social and playing time...

Kitties having fun with random stuff in the house
This stuff is clingy, still figuring out cat-blogging

While our blog posts and social media sites are being set up, here is the ABOUT US:

We, the bloggers, are Yev and Lana. Our career work is somewhere in the fields of environmental science and finances. After living in the oven of Arizona for the recent 10+ years, we are now in California near the beach. We enjoy funny movies, sport activities, and practicing mindfulness in every aspect of our lives.

Meet our kitties Max and Zuma. We adopted Max (aka Maxik) when he was 2 months old in the summer of 2008 from a friend with a full litter of kitties. It didn't take us long to come up with name for Max. To us he looked like Max and that was the end of that discussion. He was on his own for about a year and then looked like he was getting bored being by himself too much. Especially since we were busy in the middle of a Ph.D. degree and full-time working/schooling. We did what we could, took care of him, fed him high quality cat food. Ultimately, we decided to get him a sibling.

We rescued Zuma the following year (in 2009) from a petstore adoption. When we arrived at the store, there were only few kitties we could pick from. We spotted a Russian Blue type of kitten, naturally attracted to it, since it was similar to other cats earlier in our lives. That kitten looked very cute and elegant. We played around with it until Yev saw another kitten that caught his attention. The other one looked like it just took a bath in the dirt (this is Zuma). She was clean but visually had a mix of black, brown and dark orange colors. She had some black spots all over the little body. Her coloring design was not 'presentable' to take home as a 1st choice, considering it was all over her face, making it look like she got into a mess. But her playfulness and attraction to us was unforgettable as we just had to pick this little kitty. This is Zuma (or Zumka). It wasn’t instant but after all we succumbed to and fell in love with her appearance and beautiful face.

After growing up together for 5+ years, now Zumka and Maxik are ready to share and continue their adventures in the spotlight. Thank you for being in the journey with us.
